Description

Women have made a place for themselves in modern society and are demanding equal rights in all fields. They are getting educated, financially independent and confident and are aware of their body image. They want to look the best they can for which they are taking help of cosmetic surgery. They are also more open about their expectations of sexual satisfaction in relationships. The natural process of childbirth stretches the muscles and tissues of the vagina, vulva, and labia. These and similar changes, whether due to giving birth, aging, or fluctuation in weight, can have a negative impact on sexual intimacy such as decreased sensation, pain, or soreness during sex. Some women may have painful intercourse due to invagination of the labia minora at the time of penetration. In addition, some women experience pain or discomfort either when wearing tight clothing or during sporting activities such as walking, horse riding, cycling etc. Some women may be concerned regarding vaginal laxity, especially following vaginal childbirth. Female genital cosmetic surgery is a simple solution to all these problems. Female Genital Cosmetic Surgery (FGCS) refers to non-medically indicated cosmetic surgical procedures which change the structure and appearance of the healthy external genitalia of women, or internally in the case of vaginal tightening. This definition includes the most common procedure, labiaplasty, as well as others, such as hymenoplasty, vaginoplasty(also known as vaginal reconstruction and vaginal rejuvenation), labia majora augmentation (with fat grafting), Clitoral hood reduction, G-spot amplification etc. The goals of genital cosmetic surgery are as follows: Symmetrical labia minora that do not protrude beyond the labia majora in the standing position. The clitoral hood is with few folds, short and not protruding. Full labia majora such that they are not excessively fat and without excess lax skin. A close-fitting vagina with improved vaginal sensations during sexual intercourse Female Genital Cosmetic Surgery is also referred to in the public domain as ‘designer vagina’, ‘vulvovaginal aesthetic surgery’, ‘barbiplasty’ and ‘vaginal rejuvenation’. In 2005, Dr. Alinsod, a Long Beach surgeon, designed the “Barbie” look, a smooth genital area with no visible labia minora. The procedure has now gained popularity worldwide. Kindly note that surgery or procedures to alter sexual appearance or function are not medically indicated. This excludes female genital procedures performed for clinical indications such as clinically diagnosed female sexual dysfunction, pain with intercourse, interference in athletic or sporting activities, previous obstetric or straddle injury, reversing female genital cutting, vaginal prolapsed, incontinence or gender affirmation surgery etc. More and more women are now seeking aesthetic surgery of their genitalia to improve appearance, pleasure and to give it a more youthful look. The factors responsible for this are as follows: 1) Perception of ‘normal’ versus ‘desirable’: The sociocultural norms that are believed to influence women’s perceptions of ‘normal’ are considered to be significant in driving the rising trend in this group of procedures. Not only does modern culture classify the minimalist vulva, where the labia minora do not extend beyond the margin of the labia majora, as ‘good’, but also the protruding labia minora as ‘bad’. 2) Internet, digitally modified images and pornography: Women have few opportunities to see other women’s genitals throughout their life due to the fact that the region is concealed, for the most part, behind pubic hair and there is little opportunity along the educational lifespan of women (and men) to become better informed about the same. But today’s digital age is changing the way we acquire information and communicate. As a result, people are influenced by information and digitally-modified images found on the internet. Pornography mostly depicts images that portray women’s genitals with no labia minora protrusion. 3) Waxing, grooming and fashion trends Grooming and fashion trends are believed to influence women’s attitudes to their genital region. Practices such as ‘Brazilian’ waxing involve removal of most or all pubic hair, exposing sensitive genital tissue and areas that could not be seen prior to hair removal. This practice is now extending to permanent hair removal via laser treatments.
